Silver Icing? How do I make it?

This blog is dedicated to my customer, Tiphanie! Tiphanie came in to purchase items to make silver icing. I had not known that you can be successful at making silver icing. She showed me the recipe and pictures that a decorator posted that showed the silver piping - without painting or airbrushing! So, I sold her the silver luster dust she needed, and she went home and tried it. It worked!  Here is where she got the recipe and the recipe is attached. Thank you Tiphanie and Cake Central!

Piping silver and gold

2 ts. Powdered sugar
2 ts. gold silver or silver luster dust
clear alcohol (like vodka or ever-clear)
1 ts. clear piping gel

On a small ceramic plate, mix sugar and dusting powder. Add a few drops of clear alcohol and mix with a small palette knife to create a stiff paste.

Add the piping gel, a little at a time, mixing well until the consistency for piping in reached. Use a very small piping bag and tip as needed. The leftovers can be put into a small container and stored in the refrigerator. It will keep indefinitely.

Thanks Roz! I love that you and your art studio are so easily accessible. I have been to your store several times and have always had a pleasurable & informative experience. It is such a great thing to be able to bounce ideas off of people. You have a variety of supplies and a wealth of knowledge that is immeasurable. Thank you for all your help!!! Tiphanie PS. When I made the Silver Icing, I needed to add a little more then a couple drops of alcohol and a smidge more of piping gel. GOOD LUCK

This is amazing. But, can I substitute the alcohol with lemon essence or something else? I am making wedding cupcakes but there are some muslims guests. Would appreciate your advise.

Yes, lemon extract is okay, however you need to make sure it does not have too much lemon oil in it, as this will not allow the "paint" to dry efficiently and evenly. I carry Wilton lemon "extract" that seems to contain more alcohol than others. Or, perhaps an off-brand might work. Experiment before you complete your final product. Best!

Hi, I was just wondering if this recipe would be ok to use to cover the cake instead of using to pipe?

Hi Rachel, I would not recommend covering the cake with piping gel as this will create a too sweet covering that will not be that tasty. I would always recommend buttercream or fondant, then airbrush. If you do not have an airbrush, you can go to the cake store and buy an edible spray, but practice first! Some cans are highly pressurized and may make a mess of the cake. I hope this helps!

Hi Kathleen, I would suggest doing an overcast of a pearl or silver airbrush (lightly sprayed) if you have one, as this effect will provide the best result. If you do not have an airbrush, you can buy a spray can with edible with pearl or silver, however you have to watch it, as spray cans can be too pressurized. If you put luster dust directly in icing, it will blend in and not stand out at all. Last suggestion is to create your cake and sprinkle cake sparkles on it to give it a flecked glitter effect. Ro Z's Sweet Art Studio has the airbrush color needed. Questions? Pop me an e-mail! Best of look with the wedding cake!!!!!!

Will this dry hard? Would you recommend using this to decorate cookies? Thanks

Jenna: Piping gel does not dry hard. I would suggest using royal icing for decorating cookies. You can always use a little lemon extract with luster dust to create a paint and paint on your cookies. The paint will dry completely. Do not use water though, or you will have a mess. Send a picture when you do cookies! I would love to see it! Best, Ro

Hi Anita: you might want to try mixing silver luster dust in with your isomalt along with the disco dust. Let me know if you have questions!
